We are now a project of Acterra!

We are happy to announce that Exploring a Sense of Place becomes a fiscally sponsored project of Acterra on July 1, 2010. Our purpose remains the same as it has been for the last four years when we were a part of Conexions: Exploring a Sense of Place is a program designed to provide the means by which people anywhere on Earth can reconnect with the natural world where they live, assisted by our guidebook, leadership training workshops and local courses. The series of explorations foster familiarity with the local geology, weather and climate, wildlife and Earth wisdom of indigenous people.

Our current focus is to mentor individuals and groups through the use of our Exploring a Sense of Place guidebook to create their own process/program for exploring the place where they live. Our intention is to broadcast this possibility to new watersheds and landscapes by getting our guidebook into the hands of many more people who will use it to initiate their own process.

Local Hero Award

We are excited to announce that Exploring a Sense of Place and founder Karen Harwell are the subject of the Palo Alto Media Center’s Local Heroes program. Explorer Group started in San Diego

Our seeds are spreading and taking root in beautiful San Diego. Chris Khoury and Linda Corey have started a group exploring the San Dieguito River Valley modeled after our guide book “Exploring a Sense of Place”. They have graciously allowed us to publish their article for the newsletter of the San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy announcing the start of the program. “Exploring a Sense of Place” offers an opportunity for people to create new patterns in their lives by making themselves available to new experiences, being imprinted by and becoming more intimate with the natural ecosystem in which they live their lives.

This is a course that offers a chance to restore your connection with the particular place where you live, its natural dynamics, systems and processes, while gaining an appreciation for your powerful impact on them so that you can consciously choose how to participate in the world around you.
